garden harvests

The hardest part of having a garden right now is watching them get sooo hot during the afternoon. I read that we aren’t supposed to water when the sun is up, since it could burn the plant, so I just have to give them pep talks instead. Thankfully, most of them perk back up in the evening.

Our spinach plant had a little trouble at the beginning of the season, but now its climbing circles around a tomato cage. harvests2

I know some people have cute garden baskets, but we always opt for the classic shirt basket. Those pear tomatoes are my fav summer snack.harvests

garden update

We’ve had an unfortunate encounter with some bugs in the past couple days. We lost a couple melon plants, but I think we’ve saved at least one. I sat by the door all day yesterday waiting for the earth to arrive.

I’m still in awe that we grew this cucumber wall from seeds. They definitely don’t like the hot hot sun, but they get quite a bit of shade from trees. And you can see the cucumbers on that back fence trying to make a run for it.

We have two okra plants, and they have already grown a couple feet at least. They make okra like machines, but we still are figuring out how to eat them…

gardenupdate2

We had a problem with pepper plants earlier in the season, so I am relieved that these ones seem to be doing much better. We have had dozens of jalepeno peppers, and are starting to get some green peppers too. And the random rocks are for holding the soaker hose in place, we aren’t just lazy leaving rocks everywhere.

rocks and plants

I have a working theory that everything I plant half dies, then, in its own sweet time, comes back to life and decides to grow. I am sure the crazy weather doesn’t help. If you left me outside in this, I would have to carefully consider coming back to life too. But I am happy to see our rock garden is finally starting to fill in a little bit. I also added that cactus in the pot for another layer, and he is just as happy as a clam there.

Gigantic cucumber

One of the best parts about our backyard urban farm is harvesting the vegetables of our labors. The other day we were out checking on the crops and we found this HUGE cucumber that had been hiding from us for what must have been weeks. Luckily we found it in time and now we just have to decide if we’re going to eat him in a salad or turn it into gigantic pickles with the new crinkle cut chopper that the girl got recently.

For the sick and needy basil of today, so that they may become productive pesto of the future.

I transplanted these pitiful looking guys into the ground near our back porch. They were doing just fine in some box planters all spring, but all the sudden looked like they no longer wanted to live. So I stuck them in the ground, and told them to think again.

And this is just a couple days after.

So. There’s that.

the tomato cage conundrum

These tomato plants. Who knew they would grow so much? Not us. The cherry tomatoes we got were labeled as “good for porch gardens”, so you would plant them in a pot, which made us believe they wouldn’t grow taller than a person. We thought to ourselves- the small tomato cages will probably be fine.

Maybe it was our fault for tenderly caring for them too much.

They have consumed the small tomato cages and laughed in our faces. They have become this massive wall of tomato plant, daring to slap you in the face with a rouge branch as you walk by. We have used some stakes and string to try to hold them in, but they are just spilling out every which way. It has been kinda rainstormy lately (which is good because we need rain!), but it makes me worry about the gangly tomato plants.

So after much stress, I found these tomato cages. Thankfully, you can build the cage around the plant. I don’t want to jinx it, because nature continues to prove to me who is boss, but look how nice and organized they are now. They have a hard time just telling me what they want, but I feel like they feel like they are better supported. Still not sure what to do about the overachievers popping out the top, but fingers crossed we are paid back with a million tomatoes!
