dark chocolate pecan cookies

I got my hair cut yesterday. I have some wavy/curly/puffy hair, so they always blow it out all nice for me. BUT, it was raining when I left the salon, so it immediately got curly in some bits. Like washing your car, and then it rains. So anyway, COOKIES.

About wheat flour- the cookie dough doesn’t always taste the way you want, but the resulting cookie has a nice chew. Helps cut down on the cookie dough eating without compromising the results.

I used this recipe here, and added dark chocolate chips and chopped up pecans (aka the only mix-ins we got at the moment). They flew off my desk at work.bigcookie3 bigcookie2

following the recipe

While I was making some cookies tonight (and eating waaaay too much dough), I starting thinking about following recipes.

There is something very calming to me about following a recipe. I think it is a control thing. You can measure and mix according to instructions, and it will come out as a finished product (and you can add your own flair here and there).

It is also a little connection to home and family. I can follow a recipe given to me by my ma, knowing that her ma, and the ma’s before her, have all made the same thing. Its like you can taste the love.

But when I was making cookies tonight, I thought about trying to make something without a recipe. Cookies sans recipe. I know the basic ingredients and mixing order, but it could be a total disaster. Or it could be awesome. And something I could pass down for years to come.

peanut butter banana chocolate chip cookies

It all started when we wanted to see a movie at Alamo. And then we looked up their new menu, which had a peanut butter banana cookie. And we thought: huh, how bout that? So I looked to see if I could find a recipe for peanut butter banana cookies. And now here we are.

These cookies are definitely chewy and soft. They have a little different taste to them (and we ran out of chocolate chips!), but if you are looking for something new and different, try them out!

getting crazy in the kitchen

Everyone hold on to your hats, because I made something, and ADDED something to the recipe. I am turning into a baking rebel.

But for real, I know I am not a very adventurous baker. I usually stick to a recipe for the most part. I might use normal butter for unsalted butter, or light brown sugar for dark brown sugar, when I want to get crazy.

But I wanted to eat an orange, and I wanted to make cookies, so I decided to add some orange zest to these chocolate chip cookies. And they didn’t turn out to shabby. The zest added a nice freshness to it. Everyone at work seemed to eat them, so I would say that is success.

white chocolate macadamia nut

My office sometimes has lunch brought in for meetings and such. Its usually never exactly meant for me, but sometimes, a leftover cookie finds its way into my belly.

But the white chocolate macadamia nut cookies from restaurants are always sooo good. They are like thick and chewy and full of delicious. So I decided to make some of my own. I used this recipe, and I highly recommend it. I mean, look at the nooks, crannies, and chunks. I still have some experimenting to do to make them come out just like the bakery, but I think this was a very good start.

chocolate orange cookies

The 21st day of February calls for cookies. A new kind of cookie. An experiment.

To satisfy this requirement, I present the chocolate orange cookie. Which is really like 10% chocolate, 5% orange, and the rest is butter and sugar. Tasty little buggers, plus fun to make. I made mine mini sized, because we want cookies, but let’s not go crazy here.

cookie time: ginger cookies

It was one of those times when my office was closed, but everyone else still had to work. I still feel a little lost on those kinds of days. I could hang out with a coworker, but really, its a day for not seeing the face of anyone that reminds me of work. That is the point of a 3 day weekend.

So I made ginger cookies from the trusty Betty Crocker cookbook. They were delicious and I ate a ton of cookie dough and 3 cookies, because no one was here to stop me.

kiss the cook

I love Hershey’s Kisses. They are super tasty, adorable, and you can save the little kiss labels and sneak them into places. And obviously, the Valentine color ones are already at the store! We are getting close to the season of kissing, so I made some kiss cookies for the guy. Don’t worry, he kissed the cook too.

peanut butter likes honey

I don’t eat a lot of honey. Not that I don’t like it, but it is just very sticky.

I know about the peanut butter and honey combo, but it has never popped into my head to make peanut butter and honey cookies. It is a true revelation. I just replaced half the butter and sugar in the recipe with some honey, and it adds a little something magical. The dough did get progressively slimy, and the cookies got flatter and flatter as I made more batches, but look at those nooks and crannies. Try them!

letterpress cookie cutters

I am a big dessert/baked treat fan (obvi). So I am looking forward to making a lot of treats for our wedding dessert table. My beautiful sister got me these amazing letterpress cookie cutters, and I tested them out the other day.

I was a little sad when I realized that I only have green and yellow food coloring. My wedding will not be Packers themed.

I think they turned out really fun! I love that each of the letters are different, so they look crazy cool when you group them together. Next time, I am going to try making them a bit thinner (even though I like a fat sugar cookie), and flood them with bright colored icing. A couple more tries, and I think these cookies have some definite potential.
