the fairy homes

We went to the Garden Festival at the park a couple weekends back. And we were pleasantly surprised to find they had a fairy trail, filled with little fairy houses! I have loved fairies since I was little, and fairy food and homes especially. Basically anything miniature that could be constructed with sticks, dirt, and flowers. I would love to make one of these for the fairy trail someday.

And our other favorite part of the garden festival was the fresh kettle corn and strawberry limeade.

plants in the front yard

Spring has hit in the front yard. The plants are coming back to life, and starting to grow into each other. Having a full, green flower garden is always the dream, right?

The rock garden is filling in nicely. I love the way the greenery grew around the pot. It makes me glad I left it right there all winter. We just added the little flower to the pot for the spring.

Our little herb garden is still going strong! The sage and rosemary have started to get very cozy together.

And the mint is spreading like wildflower. I just read that mint is a creeper, and should be contained in a pot, but oh well! Hopefully it realizes that rock boundary was an actual serious suggestion.

What are you growing this time of year?

time to grow again

I love the Easter season. All the flowers and buds appearing. The promise of leaves in all the trees comes true. The sunshine and dirt on your hands. Being reminded that nature knows what its doing. May your weekend be filled with bunnies, blooms, and love. Have a happy holiday!

two good things today

1. I got a library card! I can finally cross it off my to-do list after a million years. I got my first couple books last night, and I’ve had my nose in them ever since. As a bonus, our nearest library has a pretty cool sign.

2. I made some banana bread yesterday evening, and it was a delicious breakfast, and also afternoon snack today.

starting our summer garden

We’ve been doing some very thorough garden planning the past couple weeks. The late freeze set us back a little in timing, but everything will get planted soon!

I picked the last of our winter lettuces and greens this week. I lovingly washed them all, and sent the extras to the office so it will reach the destiny of being eaten.

We are giving square foot gardening a try this season, so we mapped out our beds, and did some research in companion planting.

We planted some seeds in a couple beds last week before the rain came, and look at that- they are already starting to grow! We have lots of beans, and a whole row of corn we are cheering on!

happy st patrick’s day

We had Irish soda bread buns for breakfast, but we haven’t found any four-leaf clovers yet. In honor of today, I looked through some of our Ireland vacation pictures from a couple years ago. We made it to Dublin the morning after St Patrick’s Day, so we barely missed the greenest holiday in the greenest country. Many fond memories were made on this trip. Here are some pictures of us in front of the Irish Sea, the garden at the Dublin Castle, standing on a bridge overlooking Dublin, and St Patrick’s Cathedral. Don’t forget to wear your green!

the strawberry patch

We added a strawberry patch to the garden! Isn’t it just the cutest little patch you ever did see.

We made the planter ourselves with our creative gardening skills. I really wanted a tiered circular planter, to add some visual interest to the garden. We had a hard time finding one that fit my landscape vision, so we made our own using some garden edging. Now its perfect.

tea with honey

In the chilly mornings before the sun warms up the house, I try to drink some green tea. Lately, I’ve been adding honey to my mug too. So it turns into mostly hot honey water. Gotta love those bees!

Hope you have a wonderful weekend, full of good activities! I’m hoping to sew another skirt, have lunch with friends, and if the weather is nice, get some tomatoes to plant!

snow day

The schools in Austin were cancelled today, on account of the winter weather. We celebrated our “snow” day with some french toast this morning for breakfast.

And here is all the snow and ice, which is hard to see on account of all the sun that came out today.
