over the weekend

Guess what? It only rained one tiny time this weekend! We did our best to spend the sunny days outside, despite the best efforts of the mosquitoes. I’m really hoping they start moving on to greener pastures once it dries out a bit. We started the weekend with some breakfast tacos and donuts, and our garden rewarded our yardwork with a good harvest.

goals for the weekend

Our goals are pretty simple: 1. Make this yum looking strawberry ice cream. Doesn’t it look the creamiest? Where can I get some pretty strawberries? 2. Pick up a couple more flowers at the garden store. The key here is that we need some blooming flowers. We have a lot of flowers in the growing stages, but we want some blooms to attract some more bees! Have a good one!

our main crop

So far, we have been harvesting mostly green beans from the garden. All the rain is making everything super big and green, but the green beans are the fastest. Two dinner sized harvests already. Plus one big strawberry we found before the squirrels did. Good thing we love green beans, and these ones are especially delicious.

my twice yearly cold

It caught me again. It always does. At least the weather is grey, and suitable for oatmeal, plenty of naps, and warm tea with honey. There is some reading to catch up on. One of the quilts needs hand binding, and there is some embroidery to be done, so I still feel kinda productive. Hope you are healthy and remembering to drink lots of water!

new library book

Getting a new library book is so exciting! I was like 50th in line, and now its mine (for a short period of time)! I’m reading The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up. Have you read it? I’m about halfway through, and it is an interesting book. Since we live in a smaller house, we are good about only keeping things we use, and not letting stuff pile up. But I am a pretty sentimental person, so I have a hard time even thinking about getting rid of certain things. And where does my fabric and yarn stash fit in??

mix your own garden fertilizer

Making your own plant food is actually pretty simple! And I’ll be able to make more gallons of fertilizer with less money than buying the premade stuff. Plus, I know what goes in it, so we know what the plants will be eating, and what we will be eating. Good strong plants need good food to grow and fight off all those pesky bugs.

wateringcan

For one gallon of water (our can is two gallons, so I double this):

I dump all the ingredients into the watering can, then fill it the rest of the way with water. Sprinkle on the garden 2-4 times a month. Then I get jealous that the plants are eating molasses, and immediately want some cookies.

the tomatoes are coming

We are so happy to have some baby tomatoes starting! I love going out to the garden and seeing how green everyone is, and how fast everyone is growing. I started making my own fertilizer mix, and I really think its working. Its a more organic blend, and you know how those hipster farmers market foods can be. Next I want to start a mason bee colony, to help out until some of our flowers start blooming more.
