Shouldn’t kids be outside?

I saw this advertisement when I was signing in to pay my cable bill and found it pretty entertaining that Time Warner had figured out a way to not only promote their faster internet but also that it empowered kids to watch more of their TV channels. I feel like at some point kids should be going outside and playing sports and stuff when they’re done with their homework and not always plopping down in front of a TV. Also, what parent lets their kid watch HBO? Maybe they’re not targeting parents with younger kids, but still…

Our bathroom in the new house was not my favorite. It literally has almost no place to put anything. The mirror is way too high on the wall, and I can only see half my face in it. It kind of needs more work, but we decided to do what we can to make it better for the time being.

And now it is like our favorite room in the house! We hung a little wall shelf with some plants. We hung a mirror ON TOP of the mirror, so I can see my own face. We added another shelf for storage with some baskets. And then we hung hooks for our towels behind the door, and added a collection of hand towels to the rack instead. Its so much brighter and happier in there now!

Bowling in the afternoon

There’s nothing like taking an early afternoon to hit the lanes for some bowling practice. A few coworkers and I hit up Dart Bowl last Friday to get some practice games in before the upcoming Beach Bowl 2013 this week and we ended up doing surprisingly well in our last practice game!

hello there

I am trying to remember the last time I grew something from a seed. I think it has to be before I left for college. We would have a garden every summer, and we would grow peas and carrots, and all kinds of things from seeds. But I forgot how thrilling it is when the tiny green leaves emerge their sleepy heads from the depths of a pot of dirt. I can’t wait to watch you grow, little sprouts.

A garden oasis

We have made a decision to use plants as decorations in our house mainly because we feel it makes our home feel more like a home and it’s fun to have lots of plants (big and small) placed in strategic locations around the house.

This past weekend we went to a garden oasis in Austin that the girl had heard about through the local Austin bloggers that she follows known as The Natural Gardener. Everyone had great things to say about it so we had to check it out for ourselves and we were not disappointed! They had every kind of plant imaginable – from huge outdoor plants to small indoor succulents. It was a pretty cool place and we will definitely be back soon as we start moving from decorating inside to outdoor landscaping….coming soon!

Her first baseball game

We were in Dallas a few weekends ago for a friend’s wedding and I took the opportunity to take the girl to her first ever baseball game. Even though it was a Rangers game (Go Astros!), it was a lot of fun. It started off a little wet with a torrential down-pour while we were trying to park and for the walk to the stadium, but when we got to our seats it started to let up and stopped for a perfect night of baseball!

How to catch a bee

  1. Go to a place outside to enjoy some good food with a great group of people like Easy Tiger, because bees will undoubtedly find you there. I recommend the corned beef sandwich and pretzels.
  2. Lull the bee that’s flying by your head into a false sense of security and bait it into flying into an empty drink glass to rest and re-hydrate.
  3. Slam a cup on top of it!
  4. Boom. Bee captured. And an example is set for all other bees who dare try and sting you.

Fresh cut grass

There is something extremely satisfying about doing yard work. I think it must have something to do with the feeling of instant gratification you get after seeing the results of your sweat and labor. The girl and I got our first lawn mower together and I was finally able to mow our lawn for the second time (the first time it was done by a very nice friend of ours while we were out of town) this past weekend! I did a lot of research on how to maintain a green lawn and found some useful articles about how to identify the type of grass you have and how tall you should mow your grass. I decided on a pretty standard 3″ cut and will see where it goes from there.

the start of a week

I like when a week starts off fresh. The to-do list from last week is all scratched off, and you start the next week with new goals and activities. I am looking forward to a change of pace this week, and taking a tiny break from sewing.
