a trip to the garden store

Our new favorite thing to do is go to garden stores. Not just because there are plants there, but because the layout and design of each nursery can be really inspiring.houstongarden2 houstongarden3

This nursery happened to have a huge warehouse full of trinkets. It was a mix of pottery, garden decorations, and American Pickers.

When we get our rock garden ready, I want to visit this succulent nursery in Austin.

garden obsession

We are super into yardwork right now. I dream about it at night, I make notes to myself all day, I google diy drainage, I tell my ma all about it on the phone. I am just really excited about it. (Plus, its an amazing workout. My arms are going to be like steel.)

We got a crop of veggies into the ground over the weekend, and then it promptly thunder/hail stormed the next day, so that figures. I check on them at least 3 times a day.

If you have ever tried to dig a hole in the Austin ground, you will probably be impressed with this path here. We are rock path making machines. We have lots of other projects planned, but we are pretty pleased with our progress so far, and we can’t wait to have summer brunch garden parties!

plants in da house

We bought a variety of indoor plants when we moved into our house. I am pleased to say at least 85% of them are still with us today. Including this here funky little plant below. I wasn’t sure if he was liking the winter, but he sure is showing his enjoyment of the spring sunshine through the window.

We were also trying to grow a little jade plant in a pot on top of our dresser, but he was starting to look sad, so I put him outside yesterday for some fresh air. As my luck would have it, we had a scary intense flash flood thunder wind storm in the evening, sooo hopefully he enjoyed his swim and is soaking up lots of sunshine today!

harvest day

Our winter vegetables were starting to look a little on the overgrown side, so we decided to harvest most of it. Except those brussels sprouts, we are gonna see how those play out. We got a ton of kale, and a bunch of little leeks. I am thinking maybe potato and leek soup? Or I found a couple casserole type dishes that used potatoes and leeks. Do you have any favorites??winter harvest

Now time to start the spring garden! We are definitely getting some tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers. Tomatillos might be fun for salsa making too! We follow the planting suggestions here, and it looks like we have a lot to do.

from the garden: arugula

We planted some winter veggies a couple months ago. They are still growing away, but we had a mini harvest of arugula! Not quite enough for a whole salad, but we shared some on homemade sourdough toast with cheese for breakfast. You can definitely taste all the love and care in it.arugula2

Doubling up on vitamin C here, and getting our greens in! I am a big fan of tomatillo salsa lately.arugula1

over the weekend

Our weekends are the best. This one included yardwork, bread making, and lots of laughing.

We were sitting on the back porch, staining pieces of wood for a project. The mosquitoes were eating us alive. We were talking about everything and nothing, and about how lucky we are to have each other. Sometimes I think about how we will someday look back on our newlywed days, and it will be the little moments like that we will remember.

over the weekend

One of the biggest perks of having a house is also having a yard. We love us some yardwork. We finally bought a shovel this weekend, so we added a couple of shrubs and some new raised garden beds to our family!

If you have ever tried to dig in Austin dirt in the hot season, you will understand why I now have blisters all over my hands. My goodness, it was like digging a hole in cement.new plants over the weekendnew raised garden beds
