making pickles

We had a few bigger cucumbers from the garden, so we decided to make a small batch of pickles. I also recently acquired a crinkle cutter, and I really wanted to try it out on some pickle chips.

This was also one of those- well, the cookies are baking in the oven, so I might as well make myself useful- moments. So I probably washed my hands 800 times while switching from cutting garlic to rolling cookie dough.

I loosely followed a recipe, but I didn’t have quite the right type of spices. And since there were cookies in the oven, I just used a mixture of what we had. Peppercorns, mustard seeds, hot pepper flakes, and dill weed.

We ended up with two little jars of pickle chips. We waited a couple days, then ate one whole jar with pulled pork sandwiches. And then we did the same thing the next day. Now we are saving up our cucumbers for the next batch!

morning hike

Jon drove by part of the greenbelt for work the other day, and he was convinced that there might be water down in the creek. So twist my arm, we went on a morning hike to investigate. Now we have gone in the summer a few times before, and it was dry as a bone, so imagine our surprise and delight at this sight. We found it!

sourdough/ week fourteen

This is a walnut bread. It always happens that we run out of honey when making bread. In my head, molasses is also a sticky sweet substance, so I usually top it off with that.

I was super impressed with how well it puffed up. Its proofing box magic.

These turned out a little blurry, but it looks like a legit slice of bread! With the little ridge on top and everything. Just like the professionals.

And then we made some super awesome grilled cheeses!

summer tv watching

What are you watching this summer? During those too hot weekend summer afternoons, we tend to hole up in a shady room and watch shows. We’ve been watching Downtown Abbey together, and then we recently started watching Orphan Black, so naturally we are almost done with it. If you haven’t seen it yet, Orphan Black is amazing. The same person plays a lot of the characters, and we have to continually exclaim out loud how much our minds are blown.

things that caught my eye/ twenty two

1. Do you ever stalk airbnb? This is a houseboat in Paris next to the Eiffel Tower. 2. Obsessed with this garden, and how green it is. 3. An instagram full of bread pictures. 4. Pretty shoes. 5. Breakfast tacos with avocado and radish salsa. Did you know we love breakfast tacos?

Basically gonna spend the weekend watching these seeds grow. I have a book to finish reading too. So much to do. Happy August!

garden update

We’ve had an unfortunate encounter with some bugs in the past couple days. We lost a couple melon plants, but I think we’ve saved at least one. I sat by the door all day yesterday waiting for the earth to arrive.

I’m still in awe that we grew this cucumber wall from seeds. They definitely don’t like the hot hot sun, but they get quite a bit of shade from trees. And you can see the cucumbers on that back fence trying to make a run for it.

We have two okra plants, and they have already grown a couple feet at least. They make okra like machines, but we still are figuring out how to eat them…

gardenupdate2

We had a problem with pepper plants earlier in the season, so I am relieved that these ones seem to be doing much better. We have had dozens of jalepeno peppers, and are starting to get some green peppers too. And the random rocks are for holding the soaker hose in place, we aren’t just lazy leaving rocks everywhere.
